Vitamin K Rich Foods
Warfarin (Coumadin) is a complex medicaiton which can be tough to regulate. Vitamin K, found in many foods (especailly green leafy vegetables), can interfere with the metabolism of the drug. Though it is not necessary to completely avoid these foods, eating them on a consistent basis can help to keep your warfarin levels within the therapeutic range.
Other things to keep in mind when on warfarin:
• Drinking alcohol on a daily basis interferes with the body's ability to metabolize the drug. Alcohol should be limited to 1-2 serving on an occasional basis.
• Many medications interfere with warfarin, particularly antibiotics. Be sure to let your physicians know about any medication changes.
• Over-the-counter pain relievers like Ibuprofen (Advil) and Naproxen (Alleve) can make patients on warfarin more likely to suffer bleeding complications and should be used with great caution.
